Human suspension — the act of hanging the body from hooks pierced through the skin — has deep roots across cultures and centuries. From ceremonial rituals practiced by Indigenous communities to modern expressions of endurance, transformation, and control, suspension has always existed at the intersection of body, spirit, and intention. Today, it's both an art form and a personal ritual, evolving with those who choose to experience it.
People choose to suspend for all kinds of reasons — release, ritual, healing, control, or simply to feel something beyond the everyday. For many, it’s a powerful reset; a way to reconnect with their body, process pain, or reclaim agency. It’s not about shock — it’s about intention, surrender, and transformation.
I only practice human suspension with a trusted, professional troupe that prioritizes safety, consent, and proper rigging. Every experience is facilitated by skilled practitioners using sterile equipment, secure setups, and trauma-informed care — because with something this intense, safety isn’t optional, it’s everything.
I suspend because for most of my life, my body hasn’t felt like mine. Living with chronic illness, trauma, and mental health struggles means I often feel disconnected, out of control, or completely numb. Some days, I’m just surviving in a body that doesn’t listen — a mind that won’t quiet down. But when I suspend, all of that falls away.
Suspension pulls me back into myself. The pain is purposeful, the stillness is earned. My mind goes quiet, and for once, I’m fully present. There’s a calm that comes over me — a kind of euphoria when the endorphins hit — that makes me feel more alive, more grounded, and more in tune with my body than anything else ever has. It’s not about escaping. It’s about returning.
It’s also performance. It’s ceremony. It’s a challenge. Pushing my body to do something so intense and intentional gives me a deep sense of accomplishment — not in spite of my struggles, but because of them. And when people come up to me after a suspension — at conventions, in crowds — and tell me they felt it, that it moved them, that the energy hit them like a wave... it means everything. That shared energy, that impact, that connection — it makes me proud. Proud of what my body can do. Proud of the work. Proud to be witnessed.
Suspension reminds me I’m still here. That I’m still capable of power, beauty, and presence — even in a body that’s been through hell.

Your most pressing suspension questions answered
Yeah, they really are. The hooks go just under the surface of the skin, and yes — it’s intense. But it’s done in a sterile, controlled environment by experienced professionals who specialize in safe suspension
Yeah, it hurts — but not the way most people think. The pain is sharp at first, but then your body kicks in with endorphins and everything shifts. For me, it’s a reset. It quiets my mind and brings me fully into my body. The discomfort is part of the process, but what comes after is peace, clarity, and a kind of high that’s hard to explain unless you’ve felt it.
Yes, the hooks are only in for the duration of the suspension. Once I come down, they’re carefully removed by the suspension team, and the entry points are cleaned and bandaged. The skin usually heals pretty quickly — it looks intense, but with proper care, it’s surprisingly low-impact on the body.
Suspension is for every body — all shapes, sizes, and experiences. If you’re curious about trying it, I recommend reaching out to a reputable troupe who prioritizes safety and consent. I personally suspend with @cenobytesuspension, and they’re a great place to start if you’re local or want to learn more. If you're outside their area, look up trusted suspension teams near you — and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good troupe will always make you feel informed, supported, and safe.
